Wes Thomas
Wes joined AFC Bournemouth from Crawley Town originally on loan back in September 2011 when the club was in Division One. He was a Lee Bradbury signing who joined permanently in January 2012. At first Thomas did well with Michael Symes up front which got him the permanent move, but the goals soon dried up and he seemed to lose some confidence. I think he scored seven goals during his loan period to AFC Bournemouth and just t four when he signed permanently, from 26 appearances.
When he is on form Wes is a powerful runner who will stretch defences and holds the ball up well. He gets most of his chance by his pace which gets him in and he is often played in one-on-one, when he curves his runs well. His problem has been his shooting accuracy. While he does not score many with headers he is a player who breaks his neck to get into the box . His link up play and vision is good and he is great at bringing in other players high up the pitch.
Wes needs to be happy and to enjoy his football and I hope the move to Rotherham works for him, because on his day he would be one of the best strikers in league One with his experience. Steve Evans will also know him well from his days at Crawley and if anyone can get the best out of him it will be Steve.
Wes went out on loan at Portsmouth, Blackpool and Birmingham in 2012-13 and he did manage to score a few goals, especially at Portsmouth. He seemed to want to be a Championship player and if the managerial changes had not happened at Blackpool he might have made a move there more permanently, but Mike Appleton left and the Birmingham Citymove did not really work. I thought he may do well coming back to AFC Bournemouth last summer but the competition for places has been too strong for him.
Eddie Howe has always rated Wes Thomas highly and I believe he is a better player than most Bournemouth fans give him credit for. Finding the best partner for Wes will be important. While he can play as a loan striker he is best in a 4-4-2 from what I have seen and his aggression and speed can be a real handful for defenders. I wish Wes Thomas all the best. It may be that he will find League One the place he needs to be to win regular football.
