Never Say Die

Sheffield United drew at the Keepmoat as Dave Kitson and Nick Blackman showed United's never say die attitude was still there. The Blades who had drafted in experienced   defender Danny Higginbotham as cover for Neil Collins.

1st Half
In the first Half  Sheffield United were dominant in the opening 5 minutes with Tony McMahon had a free kick saved by Doncaster keeper Gary Woods which was tipped just past the post. A couple of minutes later it all changed with David Syers being brought down by United keeper George Long
in the box and Doncaster were given a penalty which was scored by Billy Paynter (18 mins). Doncaster were easily the best team in the first 45 minutes as they came forward again with Paynter missing by an inch. Long kept the Blades in it and was the busiest of the keepers in the first half. Terry Kennedy who was drafted in and was one of many academy graduates who started. Terry was solid at the back but with long punts up from Keeper Gary Woods to Billy Paynter Anyway United went into the break with only a fine margin to catch.

2nd Half :
The Blades came out and Cotterill who thread through Syers straight from kick off  as his shot was save by the leg of Long. The Blades brought on Joe Ironside in the 78th minute was the game changer. Ironside got United a pen and shortly before Billy Paynter was shown a red card after he apparently kicked out at Tony McMahon which was unseen by the referee but was shown red. United took advantage  when Andy Griffin brought down Joe Ironside. And Nick Blackman stepped up with his Balotelli  phisque penalty taking skills and finished. Then United came forward with one last attack and Dave Kitson shot and it rebounded to Matt Hill who shot rebounded of to Kitson who finished to break Rovers fans hearts and send the 4,200 fans of the Blades mental. United came forward with Blackman in the closing stages but nothing came the whistle blew and United drew 2-2.
Wilson said
Sheffield United manager Danny Wilson told BBC Radio Sheffield:
"We were on the back foot in the large part of the game but we stuck in there. I was pleased with the last half hour as we put a lot of tempo in our game.
"All of a sudden you can see the back line dropping and you know you're getting a foothold in the game.
"Thankfully we got a good penalty at a good time.
"It's a great point from our point of view, I know that but I wouldn't say that from their point."
Dean Saunders said  :
"We could have been six or seven nil up and they never had a shot on goal until a couple of minutes.
"The referee gives them a penalty, it's never a penalty I've seen it again and it's an outrageous decision.
"Then the referee sends Billy Paynter off, he says Billy kicked out, but he's just untangled his legs."
